3G Christmas on Little Corn Island

santa

Greetings,

I’m back home on the Corn Islands off the coast of Nicaragua in the beautiful Caribbean Sea; oh how it feels good to be home! I’m on a 3G connection on Little Corn Island and I still can’t believe it; feels like only yesterday it was nothing but edge… That said, there is nowhere I’d rather be right now than at home with the folks and family but such is life when you lead one like this,  yes? The year 2014 was a good one for yours truly and I hope it was for you as well. I’d like to wish you and your family a happy holidays, happy new year and all that jazz.

Looks like Christmas came early for yours truly and other in the loop residents of Little Corn Island. I was in my office where I’m writing this now and looked at my signal all to realize I was on 3G… 3G on this island has been a ghost that few see and if you did see it in the past, it was only for a fleeting second or so before it was gone and it made you scratch your head wondering if you ever really actually saw it!?

Well 3G isn’t everywhere but it’s in lots of places and the idea of downloading stuff / watching YouTube videos is very much a reality now. It’s insane how this dream of mine is finally coming to fruition but as times change, so do your needs. Now I’m not just satisfied with decent download speeds and basic admin work; I’m routinely uploading ~500-1000mb files to YouTube and that changes things, big time.

In the past I’d go to Big Corn Island to do all my work because the connection is blazing fast there; it’s a hassle however and sure many of my old hard drive failures are a direct result of taking the bumpy ride countless times. I tried doing some uploads during the day but with little success until I decided to try at an odd hour of the day. Seems the early hours of the morning you have the whole network to yourself and I uploaded a ~1GB+ file on Youtube in ~2.5 hours which is faster than I’d get back at my parent’s house in Ottawa, Canada; insanity.

So it looks like Christmas came early for this gent and I couldn’t be happier. It also encourages me to live by the old trite saying of “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise…” I like the ring of that. The island is very much the same since I left ~6 months ago but also incredibly different as the tide seems to be seriously eroding the east side of the island at record speeds; also lots of new construction. Things change but the vibe stays the same(ish) and that’s what counts; yes?

Soon I’ll be sharing a lot of my YouTube videos here which has become a new project of mine; I’m scrambling like a mad man to get caught up as I’m filming lots but ~two weeks behind; the work never ends. That said, when you love what you do it’s hardly work and longs days in my “office” are quite pleasant from my perspective. I’d go on but it’s nice out and I plan on making the most of this day…

Edit – The 3G connection comes from Big Corn Island as Little Corn Island still has its original connection. You can’t get it all over the island but most certainly can in certain spots along the west coast which luckily is where my office is. Really, doesn’t matter where the signal comes from as long as it makes it here… Should Little Corn Island ever get it’s own 3G tower; watch out!

Tips hat,
